Lead Industrial Designer

PURPOSE OF ROLE:

This primary purpose of this position is to design and shepherd platforms of multiple connected product programs over multiple years. As such this position has a broad and deep technical expertise and works autonomously and with little direction to deliver multi-year product roadmaps, strategies and plans that translate user needs, manufacturing realities, brand, and business objectives into compelling products and programs that embody the ideal customer experience and meets the business objectives. This position also is responsible for defining the design problem and leading product executions that meet the branding and merchandising requirements, plus differentiate our private brands from other brands. Finally, this position has influence over multiple aspects of the creative process and must weave together resources and opportunities that drive design intent while balancing cross functional collaboration.

RESPONSIBILITY STATEMENTS

• Supports processes and methodologies for the collection and delivery of design research insights (design ethnographies, research tools, recruiting efforts)
• Works with Design Strategy to synthesizes customer insights with USHI strategy inputs and business objectives to frame key design opportunities
• Communicates key insights and opportunities to cross-functional teams to drive prioritization and decision-making• Drives an iterative approach to prototyping, evaluation, testing, and refinement to ensure targeted solution set is desirable, feasible, and viable
• Creates and develops concepts and specifications by optimizing the function, value and appearance of products and systems for the mutual benefit of both user and product program over the life cycle of the individual product groups
• Maintains design intent throughout the entire development process by giving clear and timely feedback, communicating design recommendations/direction, Design team, and cross functional team to build understanding and support and as an input to the Product Line Review (PLR) strategy
• Visualizes consumer insights, opportunities and/or design intent through illustrations, storyboarding, video, etc. in order to effectively communicate complex information to cross-functional project teams and executive sponsors
• Works proactively to ensure scoping, timelines, cost and quality are all achieved

Required Education/Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design
• 6+ years of Depth of technical knowledge across a broad domain in product design and development
• 4+ years of primary accountability and autonomy for planning and delivering complex, cross-functional product design and development programs across a broad range of categories
• 3+ years Indirect leadership experience with demonstrated success inspiring and developing technical design expertise of other designers and managing complex timelines and work processes
• 3+ years experience building brands through design methodologies delivering a steady stream of customer valued solutions to the market
• 3+ years of knowledge in technologies and manufacturing processes of complex consumer hard goods such as power tools, machines etc.• Proven success leading and influencing internal teams and or vendor development teams resulting in both differentiated customer value and business growth

Preferred Education/Experience:

• 3+ years of Direct/indirect leadership of design resources
• 5+ years experience designing in 3D (product design, environment design, architecture) with a working knowledge of related 3D software (e.g. Solidworks)\\
• 3+ years of proficiency in 2D graphical software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite)
• 3+ years experience prototyping products to varying levels of fidelity
• Functional knowledge of hand tools, power tools and decorative product design
